  1. Growing up on the streets ofBrooklyn, New York, he and his best friend, James ‘Bucky’ Barnes, had gotteninto their fair share of fights.
  2. But it was usually Bucky whomanaged to keep them safe.
  3. His parents had both died whenhe was young, and his friend , Bucky, had already enlisted and was beingshipped off the next day.
  4. Steve opened his eyes, which hehad shut in anticipation of the punch, and smiled. He knew that voice. Buckyhad arrived.

  8. And while Bucky would never sayanything out loud, it sort of mad. True , he wanted to help his country win thewar. But he was going to be shipped out tomorrow, and he was nervous. He didn’tknow what to except across the ocean, and a part of him wished he had the sameexcuse Steve did.
  9. Sighing , he handed the slip ofpaper back to Steve.“Tell me you didn’t try to enlist again ?”heasked.
  10. Steve shrugged. “My day willcome, Bucky,”he said, his voice full of determination. Bucky couldn’t possiblyunderstand what it was like to be him. Even now, standing in the dirty alley,Bucky looked like a hero—some thing Steve could never be.
  11. Seeing the sadness in Steve’seyes, Bucky decided to drop the subject.
  12. Steve raised a curious eyebrow.Bucky wanted to go to the fair? Now ? Shrugging , he followed his friend out ofthe alley . Maybe going to see an exhibition about “to tomorrow”would helphim forget all about today.
  13. A few hours later, Bucky andSteve made their way onto the fairgrounds. At some point, Bucky had managed tofind what two young ladies to accompany them and was busy  trying to get Steve talking with one of them.
  14. Making their way to furtherinto the fair, Steve and Bucky noticed a commotion over to one side.

  16. He found Steve standing infront of the one nonfuturistic pavilion in the entire fare, the US Armyrecruitment pavilion. It looked empty. No one wanted to think about the warnow, not when they could think about all the amazing things the future held. Noone but Steve Rogers. He stood staring at the tent , enraptured.
  17. “You are really going to do this now?”Bucky asked, walkingover to stand next to him.?“I’m going to try my lucky,”Steve said, nodding.“As who?”Bucky said, his voice harsh.“Steve from Ohio? Theywill catch you, or worse, they’ll actually take you.
  18. That was it. Bucky had hadenough. He was leaving for England tomorrow, and his best friend in the world wouldn’ttake the night off to have a dance or two.
  19. It was the first time Bucky hadever voiced his fears about Steve fighting in the war. Steve was taken aback byhis friend’s honesty.

  21. Steve took a step toward thetent, and Bucky put a hand on his arm . “come on,”he said. “It’s my lastnight.”
  22. His friend turned and Gave hima wry smile. There was nothing Bucky could say or do that would convince Steveto leave that pavilion. Holding out his hand, he and Steve shook. It was timeto say good-bye.
  23. Bucky watched his friend go,his heart heavy. He hoped, for Steve’s sake , that he would get what he wanted. he just wasn’t convinced that when Steve got it, it would make him happy.
  24. There was a part of Steve thatknew he was being ridiculous. How many more times could he fail? And it wasBucky’s last night.
  25. He couldn’t believe it .Afterall this time, he was actually in the army. His luck had changed . Just like hetold Bucky it would.
  26. Was Bucky right when he saidthe biggest danger would come if someone did let him in? What if this was allsome sort of joke? Maybe when he got out side he’d see  Bucky  laughing.
  27. For the first time since thenight of the exhibition, his thought drifted to Bucky and to their misspentyouth on the main streets of Brookly.,从那个博物馆的夜晚之后,他的思绪又回到了和巴基一起在布鲁克林的街区度过的少年时光。
  28. If Bucky were here right now ,Steve thought, he’d tell me ,“I told you so.”
  29. The 107th was Bucky’s unit. And he hadn’t been in the audience. Stevefelt panic grip him. Had Bucky been captured? Or worse?107
  30. Stevepaled. Bucky had died fighting while Steve had been playing a clown. It wasn’tfair.
  31. Notanymore. He’d figure out a way to get to that facility. He had to. He owed itto Bucky.
  32. “Bucky?”he said softly. Their was a moment ofsilence and then, “Who…who is that?” Steve raced over and crouched down infront of the cage. Bucky was inside! He was beaten and grizzled, but he wasalive. With one mighty swing, Steve smashed the lock. Then he held out hishand. “It’sme, Buck.”“巴基?”
  33. “Steve?”Bucky said, taking his old friend’s newlook. “Ithought you were dead,”Stevesaid. “Ithought you were smaller,”Buckyreplied as Steve hauled him to his feet and helped him out of the cage. Whenthey were both standing, Bucky stared up at his friend , his eyes disbelieving. This wasn’t the Steve he knew. This Steve was bigger , faster ,and strongerthan the scrawny kid Bucky grew up with in Brooklyn. And now , in a startlingturn of events, Steve was about to save Bucky.“史蒂夫?”
  34. “What happen to you?”Bucky finally asked. “I joined the army.”Steve answered matter-of-factly.“你怎么了?”
  35. Suddenly, a blast rocked theroom. One of the machines on the factory floor was triggered to explode, and itsent Steve and Bucky hurtling. They would have to catch up later.
  36. Putting an arm around Bucky,Steve began to lead him from the room.
  37. He took a mental picture of themap and then , as another explosion rocked the building ,moved back into thehall with Bucky.
  38. All around them , bombscontinued to go off, shaking the foundation of the factory and making it hardto move quickly. As they made their way down to the corridor, Bucky continuedtrying to get answers. He figured Steve must have undergone some kind oftreatment or been in an experiment.
  39. Dragging the still-weak Bucky,Steve got them up onto the catwalk.
  40. As Steve and Bucky gaped at thehorrific sight, Schmidt let out a diabolical laugh.
  41. A moment later, the doorsslammed shut . Schmidt had escaped, but Steve and Bucky were trapped.
  42. Another series of explosionsrocked the building , and the catwalk shuddered beneath Steve and Bucky. Therewas no time to worry about the HYDRA leader now. they had to get out of here,or they were going to end up falling to their deaths. Before Bucky couldprotest, Steve picked him up across the gap between the two sides of thecatwalk. He was about to follow him when ---BOOM!BOOM!BOOM! M ore explosionscaused the cat walk to split even wider. Steve was left stranded on one sidewhile Bucky waited for him on the other.
  43. “Just get out!”Steve shouted to his friend. “Not without you!”Buckyshouted back as the roof began to collapse.“快点离开这里!”
  44. Bucky watched in horror asSteve disappeared into the flames.
  45. Steve and Bucky walked slowlyup the road, leading the squad of rescued soldiers back to their Italian home.
  46. Steve put down his pencil andshook his head. “Not all of them,”he answered.“Bucky—I mean Sergeant Barnes—said HYDRA shipped all the bombssomewhere else. Somewhere not on this map.”
  47. Bucky overheard a lot while he’dbeen kept in the cage in HYDRA’s science lab. He filled Steve in on as much ashe could remember during the trek back from the factory. This piece ofinformation was the most important off all.
  48. Making his way through thecrowd, Steve Found Bucky in the back, leaning against a barstool.
  49. Turning, he joined Bucky at theBar. “What about you,”Steve asked when they were along.“You ready to followCaptain America into the jaws of death?”
  50. To Steve’s surprise, Buckyshook his head.
  51. “No,”he answered, and Steve’s mouth dropped open. Then Bucky added, “The littleshrimp—the kid in the alley who couldn’t stay down, and wouldn’t take no for ananswer? That’s the guy I’m following.
